A routine flight training exercise in Argentina turned into an extraordinary test of courage when a 22-year-old student pilot successfully landed a small aircraft on her own after her flight instructor unexpectedly left the cockpit during the flight.
The incident happened on July 4 near Toledo, Córdoba Province, while the student was undergoing flight training aboard a Cessna C-150 with her 42-year-old instructor, Leandro Bertazzo.
According to reports, the instructor removed his headset, put aside his phone, unfastened his seatbelt, and opened the aircraft door before exiting the plane. The trainee initially believed he had used a parachute but later realized that was not the case.
Calm Under Pressure
Despite having limited flying experience, the student remained remarkably composed during the emergency. She immediately contacted air traffic control by radio, explained the situation, and followed instructions to safely guide the aircraft to Coronel Olmedo Airport, a location frequently used for flight training.
Aviation officials praised the young pilot's quick thinking and professionalism, noting that her ability to stay focused prevented what could have been a much more tragic outcome.
Flight School Reacts
Eduardo Alvarez, director of Flying Parrot Córdoba, the flight school where Bertazzo worked, said the student clearly explained what had happened after landing.
According to Alvarez, she reported that her instructor calmly removed his headset, organized his personal belongings, unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the aircraft door, and left the aircraft before she safely completed the landing on her own.
Although visibly shaken after touching down, she managed what the flight school described as an almost flawless landing under extremely stressful circumstances.
Instructor's Final Words
Reports indicate that shortly before leaving the cockpit, Bertazzo told his student:
"You know what to do. Keep moving forward."
Those words would become the final instruction she received before taking full control of the aircraft alone.
Colleagues described Bertazzo as a friendly, experienced, and professional instructor. He had been with the flight school for about four years after completing his own training there and had also worked as a commercial pilot in Chile.
Investigation Underway
Emergency responders later located Bertazzo in a nearby field, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident. Investigators are reviewing witness statements, flight school records, aircraft data, and communications from the flight to determine exactly what happened and whether any other factors contributed to the event.
Reports also suggest Bertazzo had previously undergone psychiatric treatment, although this was reportedly known only to close family members. The flight school stated that he had successfully passed all required medical and mental fitness evaluations for pilots.
