Real Love is a romantic comedy that tells the story of a popular socialite, Tomid Jobi, whose reputation is ruined when a video of him having an argument with a woman goes viral on social media.
To restore his reputation, he must form a relationship with Dame Rita Munday. Tomita follows his girlfriend’s advice, while Rita follows her friend’s advice to use the opportunity to build a reputation, despite not wanting to be famous.
The movie is directed by Kayode Kasum and stars Timini Egbusan, Atlanta Bridget Johnson, Shafie Bella, Muyiwa Ademola, Funke Akindele, Bimba Ademoye, Dakore Egbusan-Akande, Efa Iwara, Lilian Afegbai and You Jay Omusuku.
One thing this movie shows is that relationships can be unplanned, even if the relationship is for profit. The fake relationship between Tomid and Rita is so far-fetched that they have received support and brand endorsements. I loved the plot of this movie, it turned a fake relationship into a real relationship with strong feelings for each other.
Although I still think it is rushed and unprepared. It is enough for anyone to read the story to know that this is happening. So, before letting the audience feel the feelings of the fake lovers, the director should have exaggerated to make them believe that they have feelings for each other.
One thing that stands out in this movie is the use of social media. It shows how social media is a world in itself and how people live two lives: one in the real world and the other in social media, which is fake in most cases.
One of the flaws of Reel Love is that it distracts the audience from the fake relationship and the family problems that the fake lovers face. I don't see the point in bringing up their family feud. I think this is just to give Tomides' girlfriend an excuse to see him in Rita's arms comforting her after losing her lover. Also, it would have been better if the movie focused more on the fake relationship.
On a technical note, I think I saw a mic boom in one of the scenes, a mistake that shows a lack of professionalism. How on earth did this escape the attention of the director and editor? Well, Reel Love is not bad, but it is a big step in the right direction. I have never seen a Nigerian movie that I liked in terms of color.
There is not much to say about the clothing department. What you see in this movie is exactly what you would expect from a romantic movie. Only casual clothes and nice pajamas are acceptable.
Love Reel is recommended for couples, especially those who don't know how to start a relationship. I learned a great lesson watching Tomide and Rita and their fake love. This means that true love can come from fake, hence the saying "fake it 'til you make it." Love Reel gets a 6/10, it would have gotten a higher rating if it wasn't rushed.
